Dr. Linda Hess

Linda Hess is a scholar and translator whose life-work has centered on the poetry of Kabir. Her publications include The Bijak of Kabir, with Shukdeo Singh; Singing Emptiness: Kumar Gandharva Performs the Poetry of Kabir; and Bodies of Song: Kabir Oral Traditions and Performative Worlds in North India. She has also written about Tulsidas and the Ramlila of Ramnagar. Currently she is translating a collection of Kabir’s poetry from a 400-year-old Rajasthani manuscript, to be published in the Murty Classical Library of India series, Harvard University Press. Hess taught in the Department of Religious Studies at Stanford University until her retirement in 2017.
