FOUZIA DASTANGO

Dastan e Kabir - Act Name

A story of Kabir told through the art of Dastangoi Dastaan-e-Kabir is a poetic and rhythmic rendition of Kabir's multidimensional expressions through his dohas. ‘SAAKHI RAMAINIS ULAT BAASI’ and ‘NIRGUNIYA’ reflect the hypocrisy and double standards of society. Kabir sets an example with his exemplary lifestyle and Dastaan-e-Kabir effectively conveys that. Kabir's hard-hitting satirical tone and simple truths come out best in the local desi dialect (khari boli).

Fouzia Dastango

Fouzia Dastango, as her name suggests, is an artist who has mastered the 16th-century oral-storytelling art of Dastangoi. In 2006, Fouzia visited a college function to watch a Dastangoi performance and fell in love with this art form. She has since then been dedicated to learning and practising it and even quit her permanent job as a Lecturer at the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) in New Delhi to pursue her passion. She has done over 300 shows all over India and internationally. Her focus has been to touch upon and bring out women-centric issues through her performances, while also covering a diverse range of other themes concerning our daily lives. Most recently, she performed to inaugurate The Sufi Route Concert for Peace, which was headlined by music maestro A. R. Rahman; she presented along with Javed Akhtar, eminent poet, lyricist and screenwriter. Fouzia has been recognised and facilitated as ‘India's First Woman Dastangoi Artist’ by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India in 2018.
